2 Years ago I weighed 280 pounds. Currently, I fluctuate between 165 and 170...
Around June 2016, I started drinking 1 meal replacement shake per day. I lost my first 26 pounds. Then in January 2017, I underwent gastric bypass surgery. Why gastric bypass when I lost so much on my own? I stopped telling random people about my surgery because a lot of people took it as an opportunity to say really disrespectful things about mine and other people's outwards appearance. So just to be clear: I DID NOT DO THIS SURGERY BECAUSE I WAS UNHAPPY WITH HOW I LOOKED. Anyone who knew me back then, knew I was a happy, confident fat girl (Yes, I called myself fat because I was. It's not a bad word. I owned it. I claimed it.). In fact, I was actually most worried about how I would look post-op.
WHY?
The main reason I did the surgery was because of my health. I was a type-2 diabetic, runs in the family. Growing up, I got to see how it is when adults get older and the responsibility falls on their kids to take care of them. I didn't want that for my son. He will have enough to worry about growing up in this world we live in. I didn't want to add to his stress. I had the opportunity to take control of my health then, so I took it. Within days after the surgery, my sugar levels were completely normal and now, 1+ years later, they remain normal.
REGRETS?
Initially, yes.
Just to shed a little light on bariatric/weightloss surgery, it is NOT an easy way out. Yes, it gives you an extra boost that enables you to lose weight faster. However, it is very possible to gain everything back without the proper discipline. One concern was how I would look. As a plus size woman, what you saw was what you got. Now when I get naked....there are wrinkles and excess skin from all the rapid weight loss. TMI, I know. But that's real. If you didn't know me prior, you wouldn't expect to see what you see when I get undressed. I was a confident fat woman and now I had a whole new set of insecurities to deal with.
My biggest issue: I didn't realize the mental mindf*ck I would endure after the surgery. Something as simple as eating can now make you physically ill. When your body is used to thousands of calories and now your portions are small enough to fit in medicine cups.....it messes you up. One time in the early months after surgery, I didn't wait 30 minutes before drinking after eating. It felt like my chest was closing in on me. I had heart palpitations and I started to sweat and get lightheaded. I wont say what happened next because it's a bit graphic. But all of those symptoms were caused because I over ate. Keep in mind, my 'plate' of food didnt even fill up a teacup saucer and I literally took 2 sips of water after.

I was miserable then, but eventually it got better. My diabetes is gone and I'm way more active and can run around and keep up with my toddler. So for that, I am happy I went through with it. However, I still have moments where I get sick if I eat a bit too much. Also, If you're considering the medical surgery route, you will have to take vitamins every day for the rest of your life. I'm currently taking iron, b12, 2 multivitamins and 2 calcium citrate daily.

That's my story. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any more questions about Bariatric/Weightloss surgery.

Also, I'm selling a bunch of clothes, shoes, accessories. Feel free to take a look and show some support if you're interested.
